I've always felt guilty for not liking him more but the only one I truly love is "When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer." (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/45479/when-i-heard-the-learnd-astronomer)

And that mainly because of the Breaking Bad episode! :)

That's a good one. I think his level of self-promotion is considered gauche these days. But Twain did the same. It was (and is) the only way to reach an audience.

That's so true, Whitman was totally an early hipster.

I understand his appeal, but I have to say I like the "idea" of Walt Whitman more than the reality of his poetry. I'd still visit that tomb, given the chance....

Yeah, he’s very … preachy? I can respect what he did, but I don’t read him for pleasure. I’m glad I read Leaves of Grass.

I'm from new Jersey and I learned about him from Bill Clinton using the book to get blow jobsb from young women. Our education system is abysmal. I try not to think about what aggrieved fascists think, I get agita enough already.... 😁

I've read "Leaves of Grass" and, in the pantheon of great American artists, his peers include Louis Armstrong, Georgia O'Keefe, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and small band of others.

But NGL: I first learned about him by watching re-runs of ROOM 222. Can you imagine the degree of MAGAt outrage if they named a high school after Walt Whitman today?
