This was one of my all time favorite movies... And of course, reminds me of our childhood. The animation was brilliant, and I can still hear their voices clear as day. The clip of the block sinking brought me to tears. Maybe because I'm now a mother...or maybe just nostalgia. Either way, I'll be breaking out the DVD to watch with the kids... And getting the book to read to them. Thanks for this, my sweet brother. 🥰
I had completely forgotten about this movie & book, but your description has me as entranced as a corvid watching a sparkly. I’ll have to re-watch on kanopy. It’s funny how rats & mice are not universally beloved -- though your pet rats sound adorable -- but show up so frequently as protagonists in animated movies.
I admit to being a bit disappointed with some of the changes made in the film, but back in another century, I read this book to my four children. My oldest son (then 9) never read for pleasure at the time, but when we finished the book, he asked for it and read it for himself starting the next day. It was the start of a voracious book habit that has lasted more than 40 years.
Watching the wizard die traumatized me as a small child.

I read the book years ago, I want to read it again now. Let me know what you think.
One of my favorite movies of all time. <3

I would read the book again.
I saw this in the theater and never since. I need to rectify that....
It's on streaming. Free on kanopy which you can often get through a library.
