I highly recommend it. There’s one in Winslow that’s easy to get to, and safe. Not the “Jersey Devil” one, but across the road from it. The JD one is very easy to get to, but isn’t very blue.
Alright, bear with me here, but there’s just something incredible about the way you’re exploring these back woods of NJ — these kind of half-abandoned places, with their graffiti areas & signs in the middle of the railways & grunted greetings — and how in the middle of it all there are these blue holes which are kind of a physical connection to (probably) some kind of physical, underground cave system, some unseen space, almost subliminal spaces? As if these walks were walks through the detritus of the things that bubble up in the American/NJ subconscious? Just some thoughts. Also, I’m completely fascinated by the perch that exist nowhere else.
The fish is called the Pirate Perch, and they do exist outside the Pines. But not as common as yellow perch. Also, I read wrong. There are no bass. Just pickerel. But yes, the blue holes are spooky that way. Like passages come from deep below, to open a mouth, or a birth canal.
What a fascinating place. I'd love to give it a good prowl. And 80°?! Wow. We cracked 60° yesterday (it's back below 40° today) and I was all for going naked but for a loincloth.
If you're ever out near Philly I'll take you out to the Pines. and the weather has been crazy. it's below freezing right now and it's supposed to be in the sixties all this week.
I need to explore these blue holes now.
