Totally sharing this one with my mom -- I’m sure I’m getting everything wrong but I think a cousin tried to start a little airline with other home-from-the-war pilots in rural KY and OH. I think it worked for a little while until everything got bought up & consolidated into major hubs by bigger airlines -- a process that continues today. Like you, I’m generally pro-conservation, but I can’t help but wonder what the country would’ve looked like with layers of transportation like you describe -- rail lines, small airlines, & then the cars etc. on top of that. Thanks for the toad & prickly pear as well -- I’m surprised by the cactus too!
