I have a couple people that I just don't schedule time with anymore and I'm happy to have a name for them. I feel like modern communication devices make it way too easy to not live up to the commitments we've made with people.
Dude. My wife and I ditched the kids with her sister of New Years to go to a casino, something we never do and aren't exactly into, long story, but we had a fucking blast together. But lemme tell ya something, amigo. The place was crawling with multi-child families when it wasn't crawling with lookalikes from the cast of the Dangerous Nights sketch from I Think You Should Leave. I can't imagine a more menacing place to bring kids. There's plenty of kid-friendly stuff to do there but it's also swimming in booze and the generally bad vibes of slot machines and table gambling. I was stunned. I'd have jumped from the roof if my parents ever brought me to place like that.
Yeah wow. In Atlantic City it's no kids on the gaming floor. I mean I would be thinking some degenerate gambler would sell my kid to pay off a debt, if I let them run free in such a place. And I'm glad you got some time to yourself and had a blast.
Haha flat-leavers! Never heard of this but going to adopt. I distance myself from such people, though I can sometimes flake out, usually because I’m just too tired, but I always try to be honest about the reason why and I apologize for my apparent inability to “adult” and manage my own energy and schedule. Fascinating read none the less!
It's only when it becomes a habit that I'd even worry about it. Everyone has to bail and take time for themselves (or their kids) now and then. But when you cancel more often then a rocket launch or a Southwest airlines flight, then there's a problem...

Yeah, we let them reach out to us. So they did and then canceled. So we went out by ourselves and had a good time.

That's what I get for trying to edit at the last minute!
"I end up making friends with the people I" got cut off.
I end up making friends with the people I know are reliable, because we value each other's time.
