Nickel and Dimed is the most expensive book I ever bought. I've been overtipping ever since.

Two things. First, I remember sitting in the Fox Theater (RIP) in Missoula waiting on The Highlander to start, not really knowing anything about it. And that intro to "Princes of the Universe" blasted through the speakers and my friend and I were thunderstruck. What a memory.

And second, having never seen Dirty Dancing, I'm confused by the Catskills/Virginia references. When I went to Chimney Rock State Park in North Carolina on a Last of the Mohicans pilgrimage, besides LOTM merch in the gift shop, they had Dirty Dancing stuff too. I was confused, and when I asked, the person pointed out the window and into the valley below and said that was the resort where DD took place. What gives?!

Thanks for the Patti Smith video. The light coming in the windows during the song!

Also always love watching Freddie Mercury perform ❤️

Thanks for sharing the Patti Smith song, which was sublime as always.

I think my brother and I are taking my Mom to the Dirty Dancing-in-Virginia venue on the occasion of her 82nd Birthday tomorrow! I’ll try to get some photos -- it’s always exiting when mom lifts me over her head at the end of dinner.

And I’m with you on Nickel and Dimed. When I read it -- a few chapters at a time over lunch hour because I couldn’t afford the hardback -- I somehow didn’t realize that you could just go & do an experiment on yourself & then write about it. Eye opening in all kinds of ways.

On the topic of “Nickel and Dimed” you may want to read “The Hidden Evil” by Mark M. Rich https://avalonlibrary.net/ebooks/Mark%20M.%20Rich%20-%20The%20Hidden%20Evil%20-%20The%20Financial%20Elite's%20Covert%20War%20Against%20The%20Civilian%20Population.pdf

Nice. I saw Patti Smith back in 1978, a young Tom Petty opened up for her. Interestingly, I believe that the locaction that Dirty Dancing was filmed (near Asheville) also burned down...
