I had an adventure today with some Subaru drivers in the Pine Barrens. The group leader fried their starter and battery in a deep washout, while we were gathered at the staging area. I led the caravan to a spot I've never visited, after getting their coordinates. For a person who gets lost in a dog park, that was an achievement. I got to meet some cool people, and I may have to start camping so I can hang out with them. More photos and video soon.
On the way back I checked out Burnt Mill Road, home to the Atco Ghost. Running water ran across the road, so I turned back. See? I do learn. Anyone who goes there to summon the ghost at night is on for a very rude surprise. The legend is that a kid was killed by two drag racers, and you summon him by flashing your lights three times “like in a race.” (these people have obviously never been in a drag race). There are many signs warning drivers that children play here and to slow down, and the road is not paved or wide enough for two cars, so I'm guessing trucks or ATVs must do it. No “drag racer” would use this road. Not even Ru Paul.
I also stopped at an Italian deli and found fresh made pesto and oriechiette pasta, and had a great fried eggplant and broccoli rabe hoagie. It was so good that I had to vacuum the car and wash my shirt after eating it on the drive home.
Can’t wait to hear the story of the folks with the breakdown, and in the meantime I’ll be over here, ruminating dreamily about the fried eggplant sandwich.
This was Aversa. They're pretty good. We should take the kids hiking before camping. Or get them used to sleeping in a tent in the yard! I'll text you from the hotel... Camping ain't my bag. I sleep badly in most hotel beds. I camped on an air mattress one and it still sucked. I'm toying with the idea of one in the back of the car. They sell window inserts so you get air but no bugs. There are also rooftop tents but they are inconvenient in as many ways as they are convenient. Like climbing down a ladder to pee, having to fold it up to use the car, etc. I want to get a trailer hitch bike rack and road trip around the country going mountain biking.
If I take them, I was looking into camp sites with cabins. I know...not REALLY camping. But it's a start. Anyway...I've been looking for a bike rack for at least 3 bikes so I can take mine when I take the kids... Cross country, eh? Pretty ambitious!!!
The good bike racks need a trailer hitch. Cabins I can do. I need to test out my battery for the CPAP. But I'll definitely do that. I know there are cabins here at Parvin. It has a nice lake. By you it's probably Delaware water gap or bust. Brendan Byrne is just south of Toms River and is kind of halfway between us. Beautiful area. I'll share my trip there soon.

It was a really good sandwich. Aversa's Italian Bakery.
I’ll have to make it up there sometime.
What deli? Yummy!! And I've been planning on taking the kids camping for a while. 😁

Just barging in here to say I’m totally with you on the cabins. Why be miserable?
