I loved Soul of an Octopus and yep, also haven’t eaten octopus since I read it either.
And I’ve only been to Cape May once but we should meet up there sometime — i don’t think it’s too bad for me with the ferry? Plus ferries are just fun.
One of my favorite tidbits of geographic esoterica is that Cape May is SOUTH of Washington, DC 😲
I've been repeating that for years, to anyone who has listen, whenever going "down the shore" comes up in conversation. Now I feel like I need to finally see for myself!
I didn't know that! You can take a ferry to Lewes and visit Rehoboth beach, and Dogfish Head brewing. Cape May Brewing is no slouch, and there are a few excellent restaurants in Cape May. It's worth a trip. No ferry from NYC, though!
I think the historical signage would have to rust away, but it's possible. The ship has nearly disappeared under the tide before. There's also a railroad track on one of the beaches that only surfaces after storms.

Wow! I didn’t know that. Thanks!

LOVED "The Soul of an Octopus."
The book inspired some octo fiction. Lily and the Octopus, and Remarkably Bright Creatures. I haven't read them yet.
Incredible to think of how many generations will be looking out at that wreck, and how its history might fade into myth.
