Holy bejezuz how breathtaking. I love that video of the ravens against the autumn colors.
I hear you 100% on the other guests at such places. Some are fantastic and some ... you just can't believe people actually act that way.
For a hot minute on safari, I thought, maybe I'll give up my entire life and move here and learn the biz and open a safari camp and then I realized that I couldn't because I'd probably kill a guest within 48 hours which is not ideal in the hospitality business. Other guests would behave all kinds of ways to the staff. I saw one woman trying to explain wine to a Kenyan warrior like he was a toddler; another woman told me all about how her nanny was so grateful to her daughter for existing.
But why should the assholes get all the good views? I'm glad y'all went & grabbed some.
Thanks. It's always the posts that I work on that, I feel like they don't generate much of a response. I never know what readers will react to! This one, I was unsure. I had a great time there, but I felt uncomfortable as well. And I wanted to share that as well as the beautiful foliage.
So jealous! I've wanted to go there for years, and reading this has done NOTHING diminish that wish!
(Separately, I'm NOT a T.C. Boyle fan. Hard to say why, I've read a number of his works and there's always a certain je n'est sais quoi that feels...overwrought?)
I've only read Wellville, but I'll keep that in mind. I haven't been drawn by any of his other books. You ought to subscribe to the Mohonk mailing list, they offer deals on short notice. If you can hop a train up from the city for a weekend or a night, you'll save quite a bit.
It IS gorgeous there - I hiked around the property years ago and thought about staying there or at least making lunch reservations, but never got around to doing it.
I think it's extravagantly priced, but I don't feel fleeced at all. It's a worthwhile treat if you can splurge. I doubt I'll go yearly, but it's tempting to return for winter, spring, and summer.
My family has been hiking and mountain biking at Mohonk since before I could walk but I have never gotten around to staying there. I’ll have to do so someday. I remember my parents getting my grandparents a weekend stay there for one of their big anniversaries and everyone raving about it. I’m glad you enjoyed it!

The landscape looks lovely. Not sure how I feel about rubbing anything on the upper crust. ;-)
That's how you get a yogurt enema.

It's a bit pricey, but a really nice escape, and not very far.
