I don’t think I’m alone in my surprise that the descent into fascism was so quick. When we look back at the Weimar Republic of Germany we think of wheelbarrows full of useless currency used to buy bread. America bent the knee because a dozen eggs costs four bucks.
I was looking forward to exploring more of this country, but I can’t ignore the fact that half the voters in it chose to be led by hateful rapist a second time, after knowing how little he cares about them…because they want to see other people get hurt. Even in my little peninsula of New Jersey, we came within a few points of giving him our electoral votes.
The morning after, I drove to donate books to a foundation and traveled one of the ugliest highways in my state. You can’t see a tree from it. Only billboards, traffic lights, and telephone poles. It is revolting. It’s a side of my country I try to forget by immersing myself in nature. That is my privilege. This was at 5:30 in the morning because I could not sleep, and the ugly road was already clogged with commuters who can’t ignore it, they have to drive it every day before dawn. Maybe they were too busy to vote. Maybe the ugliness consumed them and made them want to see others hurt as much as they do. We forget that last time, mail-in ballots made it easy. That’s why they got rid of it: too many plebs voted.
When the mass deportations begin, do not be surprised when citizens “get caught up in it.” I gently suggested to people in 2016 that they may want to look into self-defense and disaster preparation. The next administration may not be inclined or able to help you in an emergency. You’ll recall that having your tax money used to mitigate disasters now depends on how your state voted. Prepare accordingly.
